OVERVIEW:

When monsters besiege Voiyanna, the Council of All sends ambassadors in search of a mythical hero for help. Twins selected to go will have to grapple with the death of their father and the truth that got him killed.

DESCRIPTION:

Monstrous beasts lay waste to the world of Voiyanna. Amidst the chaos and terror, the Council of All gathers to consider solutions. With the vaunted city of Elitia teetering on collapse, all hope, reluctant or not, is placed on specially selected ambassadors who are to seek out an ancient — and supposedly long-dead — hero, known as Apirion Hail.

Among those sent are a rookie beast-keeper, a voiceless girl, an anti-beast zealot, and twins grappling with revelations surrounding their father’s death. In-group hostility becomes a threat to the mission, so the ruthless Sire Thrill and his personal droid force everyone into a frail truce. The brief unity collapses when they discover that Apirion — their last hope of rescue from the monsters that stalk their every move — not only lives but is far deadlier than the beasts from which they sought refuge.

Some legends might be better off left dead.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Brett is a trained comic book illustrator from the Joe Kubert School, a Creative Consultant, and will begrudgingly drink tea even though he thinks it’s just water that won’t fully commit to being juice. He is married to a tea enthusiast who doesn’t care for that joke, a father to children who don’t get that joke, and a Christian who finds exploring God, scripture, and theology a fascinating way to spend time with others regardless of whether they like that joke.

This book is a great introduction to a world where everything is not always as it seems. I highly recommend it to fans of fantasy books.

    Engaging and thought provoking

A wonderful and gripping fantasy book that makes a very important point about the world that we live in today. Fresh ideas and a wonderfully told story. This book is both pleasant and thought provoking. Looking forward to a second read.

This book was thought provoking and engaging. It was well thought out and quite unique in it’s story line. It was a good length and I did wait to review till I actually read the book. My only potential criticism is it starts a little slow (but I always feel that way about books most of the time).

  4. Rated 5 out of 5

I usually avoid the fantasy genre as a rule, but there were multiple things that kept me reading to the end. The fact that I was wondering where this story would end up the entire time I was reading, or perhaps the incredibly likable hero who was at the same time complex and perplexing, not to mention a most satisfying twist near the end. Unique and unexpectedly satisfying read that kept me thinking long after the last page.

  5. Rated 5 out of 5

It’s always refreshing to read a book that doesn’t rely on explicit content, instead focusing on rich characters and a compelling story-line. I enjoyed diving into a story that emphasizes depth and development, although I did find the large cast a bit challenging to keep track of (though, this is more of a personal issue with focus).

I was genuinely invested in the journey, eager to see where it was headed, and the twist completely caught me off guard—such a welcome surprise!

Overall, this book is a well-crafted debut that I’d highly recommend to anyone who enjoys fantasy without the excess of sex, magic, and language that many books include.
